A High School Student Drinks Excessively With His Friends, Almost Dies From Alcohol Poisoning, And Discovers That Paying Attention In Class Can Change Your Life
Andy was a high school ninth grader who commonly seemed to be living on the edge. Andy had an adventurous personality and regularly wanted to do what his older brothers were doing for fun. The basic problem with this was that all three of his brothers were at least 21 years old and were as a result able from a legal vantage point to drive a car or truck and to consume alcohol.
Andy, however, had a hard time figuring out that as a fifteen-year-old teenager he should not be drinking. In fact, conversely, Andy usually drank with his friends after school, primarily on the weekends.
One weekend, Andy was invited to drive around with some of his older friends. One of his friends was old enough to purchase alcohol. After buying some beer, wine, and wine coolers, Andy and all of his buddies went to a public park and drank for approximately two or three hours.
After drinking roughly five alcoholic beverages, Andy started to feel woozy and then threw up. When he passed out on the outdoor basketball court, one of his drinking buddies called 911 for immediate medical assistance. It was fortunate that the call for emergency help was made because when his buddies went to the hospital to see Andy, they learned that Andy had been suffering from alcohol poisoning symptoms. More to the point, Andy had experienced an alcohol overdose.
After getting alcohol poisoning treatment, Andy was truthfully amazed to gather that he had overdosed on alcohol because he "only" had approximately five or ten drinks. When he told this to the attending healthcare professional at the hospital, conversely, the physician informed Andy that drinking five or ten glasses of wine over a two or three hour period of time could surely be significantly more alcohol than can be processed by the body. The doctor further expressed how extreme amounts of alcohol can cause the brain to shut down a person's breathing and that when this comes about, a person can pass away.
This was the first warning to Andy that he was drinking in a hazardous way and that there are costs for such actions. The physician told Andy that he was a fortunate individual because he almost died from alcohol poisoning the previous night.
The physician also conversed with Andy's parents and suggested that they get alcohol rehabilitation for Andy. His parents were thrilled that Andy was all right and informed the healthcare practitioner that they would follow through on getting Andy alcohol rehab.
While conversing with his parents, Andy told them that there must be a solid reason why he did not perish and that he felt a sense of thanksgiving that he was still alive. He also told his parents that the odd part about the entire drinking occurrence was that he had learned about alcohol poisoning last week at school in Mr. Johnson's health class.
At the time, what his health instructor, Mr. Johnson, was saying didn't seem to make too much sense to Andy. Since he almost passed away, however, he felt that he should have listened more attentively in Mr. Johnson's health class and applied what he had learned to his personal life.
Andy informed his parents that he couldn't wait to go back to the classroom and apologize to Mr. Johnson for not paying better attention to a topic that was as pertinent as learning about alcohol poisoning.
