CPSC Issues Alert To Parents Relating To Sling Newborn Carriers

As many of you have almost certainly heard, the CPSC has issued a caution to parents and how they manage their newborns in their baby sling. |A little over a week ago, the CPSC broadcast a notice for parents to use care while handling their newborns in infant slings.

The commission warned parents to "be cautious when using infant slings for babies younger than four months of age." Additionally, they also urged parents of petite infants, twins, and infants in poor health to consult their pediatrician before using a sling with their child. "We know of too many deaths in these slings and we now know the hazard scenarios for very small babies," said CPSC chair Inez Tenenbaum.

A variety of fatalities involving infant slings are being inspected from the past 20 years by the CPSC, including three deaths from 2009. Twelve of the fatalities involved infants younger than 4 months of age. Many of the babies who died in slings were either a low birth weight twin, were born prematurely, or had breathing issues.

Two specific hazards to your infant are innate with infant slings. In the first few months of life, babies tend to lose control of their heads because their neck muscles are not yet fully developed. The baby sling carrier cloth can obstruct the infant's nose and mouth, interfering with the baby's breathing and resulting in hurried suffocation. Also, keeping your child in a curled position is asking for trouble. This restricts the airway by bending the chin onto their chest and can limit the oxygen supply. Your child won't be able to cry for help and could gradually suffocate. The CPSC always recommends that parents utilizing the baby sling make certain that they can see the infant's exposed face and be sure the baby's face is always visible.
