Miniature Pooch Training
Exactly why dog lovers hold this preconceived belief that small breed dogs are more problematic to train than medium sized or large breed puppies, I will never be able to know.
Housebreaking a puppy, despite its size should not pose a problem.
Small dog training, is not different from training a puppy dog of any other larger sized breed. Whilst training any canine will have its peculiarities, according to its breed, almost all other features remain identical, and the strategy to training the dog should be the same, not withstanding its size.
With that said, I will allow myself to be corrected here, and accept that small dog training may create issues in two arenas, (1) Aggression and (2) Puppy crate training. Nevertheless, this is not because the fact that it is a small breed dog, but in all case studies, because of the owner.
If a smaller breed pup is aggressive and poses a training problem, or if a small breed dog cannot be bathroom trained or poses challenges in being toilet trained, it is the owner who has ignorantly contributed to this dilemma. Let us analyze how and why.
Aggression.
Tiny dogs are preferred because they are cute, they are like toy characters. Owners get pleasure from having their puppy sit on their laps. This particular indulgence is where the problem gets going. The basic aggressive characteristic of the animal, is to claim ownership over its space, its food, even its owner; all puppies desire to be the alpha dog.
It is the ruthless streak in the pup that provokes it to jump on to the lap of its pack leader, above all when there are plenty of persons seated in the room.
This is a clear act of ruthlessness. Instead of reprimanding the pup, every owner bar none, would pet the dog, even though it jumped on to their lap without being asked to, fostering the aggressive streak in the dog. In this way the owner has seconded the pup's behavioral instinct to be the alpha dog.
Growling and snapping at a a bigger size dog is another obvious act of unwanted anger. To the owner, and even the people nearby, this is regarded as cute, mainly because one dog is very small while the other is large. Most owners pet and pat the puppy instead of admonishing it, when it exhibits this aggression towards a larger dog.
These are but good examples as to why small size breed pups are aggressive, and not because small dog training is different or difficult.
Toilet Training
Owners are inclined to lug their small puppies around where ever they are, even when they are at home and that makes it very difficult to toilet train them
It is, as if by instinct that the owners of small dogs to tote the animal to the area where the pup should go to the bathroom and then lug it back into the house.
It is this pattern of carrying the pup to the place where is should do its business that is the root of all dilemmas. In addition, since the pup is as a general rule carried around so often it has no way of it suggesting to or notifying the owner that it has to go to the bathroom.
Small dog training starts with treating the dog as any other sized dog. They have to be shown their pooping area on a leash. If owners stop carrying their miniature breed dogs they would have no obstacles in training them.
Dog crate training, is the most exciting part of pup training, and so it must be, even in Small Dog Training.
